What is Pilates and how can it benefit me?
Pilates is a low-impact, full-body method created by Joseph Pilates to build strength, flexibility and core stability. It improves movement efficiency, supports posture, prevents injury and enhances overall well-being.
Whether you choose Mat or Reformer Pilates, our focus is on aligning the body through efficient, breath-led movement. You’ll leave feeling stronger, more balanced and re-energised, both in body and mind.
Benefits of Pilates:
- Builds a stronger core and supports healthy posture
- Increases flexibility and joint mobility
- Enhances balance and coordination
- Reduces stress and tension through mindful movement
- Supports injury prevention and rehabilitation
Pilates complements traditional strength training by improving mobility, deep core strength and body awareness helping you move better and perform at your best.
Accessible to all levels, Pilates is for beginners to advanced practitioners, it’s truly for every body.
What is the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates
Mat Pilates is performed on a mat on the floor, often incorporating small props such as bands, balls, rings or light weights.

Reformer Pilates
Reformer Pilates is performed on a specially designed machine that uses springs and pulleys for adjustable resistance on a moving carriage creating both support and challenge.
Before your first class, we recommend booking a FREE 30-minute Reformer Orientation, where you’ll learn how to set up and use the equipment safely and confidently.
After your orientation, explore our First-Time Reformer Offer 3 Classes for £60 or book our Private Intro Package for complete beginners:
- 2 x Private Intro Sessions – £125
- Session 1: Consultation, postural analysis, and mat-based fundamentals (50 mins)
- Session 2: Guided introduction to Reformer Pilates (50 mins)
Do I need to be flexible to do Pilates?
Absolutely not. Pilates is designed to improve flexibility. Whether you feel tight or naturally flexible, each class helps you increase mobility, improve range of motion and release tension safely and effectively.
With consistent practice, you’ll build strength and flexibility, allowing you to move with greater ease, control and freedom in everyday life.
How often should I practice Pilates to see results?
Consistency is key. Practicing Pilates 2–3 times per week helps build strength, improve flexibility and enhance overall body awareness.
For faster progress or specific goals, such as rehabilitation or athletic performance, 3–4 sessions per week can be beneficial.
Even one class a week will make a difference over time. Everyone’s journey is unique; results depend on your goals, lifestyle and consistency. The most important thing is to listen to your body and keep moving.
Joseph Pilates famously said:
“In 10 sessions, you will feel the difference.
In 20 sessions, you will see the difference.
And in 30 sessions, you will have a whole new body.”

Which class level is right for me?
At Studio Move, our tiered class system helps you progress safely and confidently.
L1 – Beginners to Essential Movement
Level 1 classes focus on the core Pilates principles. They’re suitable for complete beginners and those looking to reconnect with the essentials. Not necessarily easy, these classes emphasise precision, strength and mindful movement.
L2 – Intermediate
Level 2 classes are for those confident with the fundamentals and ready for more flow, challenge and complexity. You’ll experience greater variety, seamless transitions and progressive sequences that build stamina and control.
L3 – Advanced
Level 3 is designed for experienced clients seeking increased intensity, coordination and mastery of the advanced repertoire. These classes challenge strength, balance and endurance while maintaining focus on precision and technique.
If you’re unsure which level to join, start with Level 1 or speak with your instructor. When you’re ready to progress, your teacher can assess your technique and advise when to move up safely and confidently.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes — we highly recommend booking ahead to secure your spot. Our classes are small and often fill quickly, with waitlists common. Booking early ensures you don’t miss out on your preferred time or instructor.

What should I wear to a Pilates class?
Wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move freely and with ease. Avoid loose garments that may catch on the equipment or restrict movement.
We recommend Pilates or grip socks, especially for Reformer classes, to improve stability and maintain hygiene.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Studio Move provides freshly filtered water for all clients. In support of our sustainability goals, we encourage you to bring a reusable bottle to refill and help reduce single-use plastic waste.
We recommend wearing Pilates grip socks for safety and stability, especially during Reformer classes. All other equipment is provided for you.
Do I need previous experience to join a class?
No experience is necessary. However, we require all new clients to book a FREE 30-minute Reformer Orientation before attending their first Beginners Reformer class.
During this session, you’ll learn the basics of the Reformer, how to set it up, adjust the pulleys and straps and practice key foundational exercises. This ensures you feel comfortable, confident and prepared for your first class.
Alternatively, you may prefer our Private Intro Package, designed for complete beginners:
2 × Private Intro Sessions – £125
- Session 1: Consultation, postural analysis, and mat-based fundamentals (50 mins)
- Session 2: Guided introduction to Reformer Pilates on a separate day (50 mins)
This package offers a personalised introduction to Pilates, helping you build confidence and a strong foundation before joining group classes.
Email Studio Move to learn more or book your private Pilates session today.
How early should I arrive before my first session?
Please arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before your class begins. This allows time for the previous group to clean their equipment and gather belongings, ensuring a smooth changeover between sessions.
If entering via the main door of Royal Victoria House (Pantiles side), you’ll need to be buzzed in. Once inside, head down the stairs to the basement and through the door at the bottom you’ll find Studio Move directly on your right.
Alternatively, you can use the rear entrance, located behind Royal Victoria House opposite the public car park (look for Studio Move signage). When using this entrance, please remove your shoes on arrival and store them in the cubby holes on your right.

What is your cancellation policy?
At Studio Move, we like to keep things simple. That’s why we have a firm but fair 24-hour cancellation policy.
Cancellations or reschedules made within 24 hours of a class or session will be charged in full, as if attended.
Cancellations made more than 24 hours in advance will result in a class credit being returned to your account for future use. Please cancel in good time via the online booking platform if you know you can’t attend.
All payments, including single sessions, class passes, block bookings and workshops are non-refundable.
Occasionally, teachers may change at short notice. In these cases, the 24-hour policy still applies, and refunds or exchanges cannot be offered due to a substitute instructor.

Is Pilates suitable for injury recovery or rehabilitation?
Yes — Pilates is an excellent tool for recovery and rehabilitation when approached with care.
We recommend beginning with one or two private sessions to learn the fundamentals and safely modify exercises to suit your needs. This helps you build confidence and ensures proper technique before joining a Beginners class.
For more complex or ongoing injuries, regular private sessions may be most beneficial to support your recovery and ensure your safety.
If you’d like to discuss this in further detail or book a session, please email us, we’re happy to help.
Can I do Pilates if I’m pregnant or postnatal?
Yes — at Studio Move, we offer Antenatal (Pregnancy) Pilates courses specifically designed to support you safely through every stage of pregnancy. These sessions focus on gentle, effective movement to strengthen, stabilise and prepare the body for birth and beyond.
If you’re an existing client in the early stages of pregnancy, you may continue attending L1 classes but please inform your instructor so they can offer safe modifications.
For a more tailored approach, we strongly recommend booking a Private or Small Group Antenatal session to adapt movements to your individual needs.
Every pregnancy is unique. Please listen to your body and follow the guidance of your midwife or healthcare provider.
